Zoetropes, Interactive Sculptures
A zoetropes is an early form of animation technology. A zoetrope is a cylinder object with vertical slits on the outside and still images on the inside. When spun, the sequenced images create the illusion of an animation. These zoetropes are interactive pieces in which the viewers engage with the work while learning the basic elements of animation. Simple imagery is used to represent greater themes for conversation, including social and economic equity, climate change and communication.
These steel zoetropes are powder coated, 21” in diameter, and range in height from 46 - 50”.
Installation
Communified, Animation Installation
Communified exhibited on three screens at the Electronic 4Culture's Storefront Gallery in Seattle, Washington. Individuals from around the world submitted anonymous excerpts of text, journal entries and letters to be animated and displayed publicly. 4Culture described Communified as, "a poetic consolidation of personal texts drawn from various participants' journal entries. The texts layer with graphics to evoke our subconscious and weave a surprising narrative about how our environment changes when we try to perceive someone's thoughts."
The video below is an excerpt from the installation.
